Social Media and Awareness Creation against Prostate Cancer in Enugu State, Nigeria

Abstract:
Background: Prostate cancer is one of the leading causes of deaths among men in Nigeria, including Enugu state. Despite the high prevalence of this disease, there is a lack of awareness and knowledge about prostate cancer in the state. This contributes to delayed diagnosis and treatment, leading to poorer health outcomes for those affected. In recent years, social media have emerged as a powerful tool for raising awareness on various health issues, including cancer.
Objective: To investigate the use of social media for awareness creation against prostate cancer in Enugu State, Nigeria
Method: The descriptive survey method was adopted. Structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 400 respondents from Enugu State through multistage sampling, selecting two towns from each of the state’s three senatorial zones. The data collected were analysed using simple percentages and presented in tables.
Result: There was high level of awareness of prostate cancer in Enugu State, particularly in the urban areas. This significantly influence positive attitude and behaviour towards early detection and prevention.
Conclusion: The study concludes that social media have enhanced public knowledge of prostrate cancer, including preventive measures and management strategies in Enugu State, Nigeria.
Unique contribution: This study has not only contributed to existing literature on cancer communication, but also have practical implications for healthcare professionals, policymakers, and advocacy groups working to improve cancer awareness and prevention efforts in Enugu state, Nigeria and beyond. The study also provides insights for individuals to make informed decisions about their health and to reduce the burden of prostate cancer.
Key recommendations: There is need to step down prostrate cancer awareness campaigns from Enugu urban to semi-urban and rural areas using other media platforms such as radio, towncries, opinion leaders, etc, for greater reach of persons in those areas.
