Perspective of Military Literatis in Nigerian Literature

| Abstract: | Background: Literature in its three main genres of prose, poetry and drama aims at projecting Information, thriller, suspense, aesthetic pleasure and inspirations to readers amongst others. The Nigeria kind of Military literatures are publications produced by military writers in form of prose, poetry and drama to help educate the public about the virtues of the military profession. Creative writing in the military is given little or no attention because of the restricted nature of military information materials.
Objective: The objective of this study is to project the literary publications of some selected Nigerian military writers. Method: Publications of selected Nigerian military writers in the three genres of literature, prose poetry and drama were analyzed. The qualitative research methodology combined genre analysis and close reading of contents was applied throughout the research. Results: Majority of military writers are in love with poetry. The contents of their work have been in circulation over a long period. There are only a few works in the prose genre and small number play wrights. Many of the publications have limited distributions as most works are self-published. Conclusion: The research concluded that military writers, military authorities and writer bodies should help to promote the military kind of literature like the African literature. Furthermore, is the requirement to produce another anthology after forty-seven years of the production of the first anthology Unique Contribution: The work is able to provide some basic fundamental knowledge to readers and researchers who might be interested in carrying out further researches on the Nigerian military Literature Key recommendations: It recommended that military personnel still in service be motivated to engage in literary activities towards the production of literary materials in line with modern days realities. Furthermore, is the recommendation that the English departments of various tertiary institutions in the military be involved in the production of another anthology after forty-seven years of the debut anthology. |
