Perceptions Of Dangote Cement PLC's Community Relations Initiatives In Ibese, Ogun State And Obajana, Kogi State, Nigeria

| Abstract: | Background: The extractive industry, particularly cement production, has significant impacts on host communities. In Nigeria, Dangote Cement PLC operates in several locations, including Ibese, Ogun State, and Obajana, Kogi State. As a major player in the industry, Dangote Cement PLC has implemented various community relations initiatives aimed at mitigating negative impacts and fostering positive relationships with host communities. Community relations initiatives are crucial for ensuring social license to operate, managing reputational risk, and contributing to sustainable development. Effective community engagement can lead to improved living standards, enhanced infrastructure, and better social services. However, the success of these initiatives depends on the perceptions and experiences of the host communities. Previous studies have highlighted the importance of community relations in the extractive industry, emphasising the need for mutual understanding, trust, and benefit sharing. In Nigeria, research has focused on the environmental and socio-economic impacts of cement production, but limited attention has been given to community perceptions of corporate social responsibility initiatives.
Objectives: This study investigated the level of awareness of Dangote Cement's community relations initiatives among community members, identify the specific initiatives undertaken, assess community perceptions, and evaluate the impact of these initiatives on local livelihoods.
Method: A descriptive survey was conducted with a population of 249,678 residents, following the Kretschmann and Morgan formula to determine a sample size of 384. Ultimately, 378 completed questionnaire were analysed using descriptive statistics. Results: Findings indicate that a positive perception in the area of infrastructure but negative perception in the areas of education, health, and environmental sustainability as many residents feel disengaged from the initiatives of Dangote cement. Conclusion: The study concludes that enhancing communication strategies and increasing community engagement are vital for improving the awareness and effectiveness of Dangote Cement's community relations initiatives in Ibeshe and Obajana. Unique Contribution: This research provides insights into the impact of corporate social responsibility on community development in Nigeria, emphasising the need for improved collaboration between corporate entities and local stakeholders. Key Recommendations: Dangote Cement PLC management should enhance communication strategies to raise awareness of community relations initiatives through regular community meetings, newsletters, and social media, ensuring residents are informed about ongoing and upcoming projects. Local government authorities should also collaborate with the company to align initiatives with community needs |
