Abstract:
Background: Although Honoré de Balzac's La Comédie humaine has been widely studied as a monumental representation of nineteenth-century French society, relatively little scholarship has explored its relevance as an analytical framework for understanding contemporary African socio-political realities. Existing studies have largely confined Balzac's socio-political thought to literary criticism, leaving a significant gap in its application to modern governance and development discourse. This study addresses that gap by examining the extent to which Balzacian realism illuminates the socio-political dynamics of contemporary Nigeria.
Objective: This study examined the relevance of Honoré de Balzac's socio-political thought as an analytical framework for interpreting contemporary Nigerian realities, with particular emphasis on governance, bureaucracy, corruption, social mobility, and the challenges of modernization.
Method: The study adopted a qualitative, interpretive, and comparative research design. It employs textual analysis of selected works from La Comédie humaine alongside a critical examination of contemporary Nigerian socio-political realities. Drawing on Balzacian realism, comparative literature, and interdisciplinary perspectives from political sociology and social theory, the study identifies convergences between Balzac's representation of nineteenth-century France and present-day Nigeria. Results: The analysis reveals striking parallels between Balzac's portrayal of the dominance of wealth in social relations, bureaucratic inefficiency, constrained social mobility, political patronage, and individual ambition and the structural challenges confronting contemporary Nigeria. The findings further demonstrate that Balzac's realist philosophy provides a valuable interpretive framework for understanding the complex interactions among political institutions, economic interests, and social actors in transitional societies.
Conclusion: Balzac's socio-political thought extends beyond its historical and literary context to offer enduring insights into contemporary governance and societal transformation. His realist approach provides a robust conceptual lens for understanding the institutional and behavioural factors that continue to shape Nigeria's political, economic, and social development.
Unique Contribution: This study advances scholarship by establishing an interdisciplinary dialogue between nineteenth-century French literature and contemporary African socio-political studies. Moving beyond traditional literary interpretation, it demonstrates that Balzac's realist thought constitutes a valuable analytical framework for examining governance, corruption, bureaucracy, modernization, and development in contemporary Nigeria. The study therefore broadens the application of Balzacian scholarship while contributing to the fields of comparative literature, postcolonial studies, political sociology, and interdisciplinary social science research.
