| Abstract: | Background: In recent years, Nigeria has faced numerous challenges in combating terrorism and violent extremism. The Boko Haram insurgency in the country's North-East region has resulted in widespread destruction, loss of livs, and displacement of millions of people. As the Nigerian government and security forces continue to grapple with this threat, there is an increasing recognition of the crucial role that investigative journalism can play in countering terrorism. Investigative journalism has the potential to uncover hidden information, expose the motivations and networks behind terrorist activities, and hold perpetrators and their enablers accountable. By digging deep into the roots of extremism and shining a light on the mechanisms used by terrorist organisations, investigative journalists can help shape public understanding and policy responses to terrorism. Objective: The study investigated the effectiveness of investigative journalism as an instrument for counterterrorism in Nigeria. Method: The study adopted multi-methodological approach that involved examining case studies, conducting interviews with journalists, government officials, and security experts, and analysing media coverage of terrorist incidents. Result: Findings show low level of use of investigative journalism for counterterrorism in Nigeria. Identified reasons include fear of inadequate protection of identities of journalists involved in uncovering of terrorism activities, ethno-religious leanings of terrorism in the country, absence of life insurance of journalists, and percieived insincerity of the governments to tackle terrorism in the country. Conclusion: The conclusion of this study is that investigative journalism has not been significantly explored as an instrument for counterterrorism in Nigeria. Unique contribution: This study provides fresh insights that could contribute to the development of strategies and best practices for harnessing the power of investigative journalism to prevent and combat terrorism in the country. Key recommendation: There is need to establish a comprehensive system for protecting the identities of journalists involved in uncovering terrorism activities, including whistleblower protection laws and secure communication channels; provide life insurance programmes for journalists working in high-risk areas or on sensitive topics like terrorism, implement training programmes for journalists on safety and security measures when reporting on terrorism-related issues, and encourage collaboration and information-sharing among journalists, civil society organisations, and security agencies to enhance investigative journalism efforts in counterterrorism. |
