Abstract:
Background: Political campaigns increasingly rely on self-affirmative discourse-messaging that aligns with voters’ identities and core values—to influence public opinion and voter behaviour. While this strategy strengthens emotional connections and enhances campaign effectiveness, it also raises concerns about ideological rigidity, selective exposure, and political polarisation. These dynamics pose challenges to democratic engagement, as they may reinforce echo chambers and hinder cross-ideological dialogue.
Objective: This study examines the impact of self-affirmative discourse in political campaigns, focusing on its effects on public opinion, voter loyalty, and ideological alignment. By applying Social Identity Theory and the Persuasion Model, the research explores both the benefits and potential drawbacks of this messaging approach in shaping democratic discourse.
Method: A secondary analysis of existing empirical studies was conducted to assess how self-affirmative discourse influences voter behaviour. The study synthesised findings from political communication, psychology, and electoral studies to identify patterns in campaign effectiveness and voter response. Results: The findings reveal that self-affirmative discourse enhances campaign effectiveness by fostering emotional engagement, reducing resistance to persuasive messages, and mobilising voter participation. However, it also contributes to ideological entrenchment, selective information consumption, and increased political polarisation, which may weaken democratic dialogue and civic participation.
Conclusion: While self-affirmative discourse is a powerful tool in shaping public opinion, its unregulated use can deepen societal divisions. A balanced approach—combining identity-affirming messaging with substantive policy discussions—is necessary to mitigate its polarising effects and promote constructive political engagement.
Unique Contribution: This study highlights the dual impact of self-affirmative discourse and provides strategic recommendations for responsible campaign messaging. It advocates for fostering cross-ideological dialogue, promoting diverse perspectives on digital platforms, and integrating civic education to counteract echo chambers. By encouraging a more inclusive and informed electorate, these insights support a resilient democratic process.
