Impact of Political Programmes on Ebonyi Broadcasting Corporation (EBBC) on Political Participation among Residents of Ebonyi State, Nigeria

Abstract:
Introduction: The mass media, particularly radio, due to its unique features are very important in shaping public opinion, influencing political attitudes, and fostering democratic participation. In Nigeria, state-owned broadcasting corporations like the Ebonyi Broadcasting Corporation (EBBC) serve as crucial platforms for disseminating political information and promoting civic engagement. Despite the importance of radio in democratic processes, there is a dearth of research on the impact of political programmes on state-owned broadcasting corporations like EBBC on political participation among residents of Ebonyi State, Nigeria
Objective: This study investigated the impact of political programmes aired on EBBC on the political participation of residents of Ebonyi State, Nigeria.
Method: Descriptive survey research design was employed, with a sample of 400 residents selected through a multi-stage sampling technique. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics.
Result: The results show that exposure to political programmes on EBBC significantly influences residents' political participation, with a positive correlation between programme exposure and voting behaviour, campaign participation, and political discussion.
Conclusion: Based on the findings, the study concludes that: there was a high level of exposure to political programmes on EBBC among residents of Ebonyi State, Nigeria. There was also high level of political participation among residents of Ebonyi State. Additionally, exposure to political programmes on EBBC significantly influenced political participation among residents of Ebonyi State. Unique Contributions: The findings have implications for policymakers, media practitioners, and civic educators seeking to harness the potential of state-owned broadcasting corporations in fostering democratic engagement and civic participation. Key recommendation: EBBC should intensify its political programming by increasing the frequency, duration, and quality of its political programmes to enhance political awareness, education, and participation among residents of Ebonyi State.
