| Abstract: | Background: Banditry in Nigeria, especially in the North-West, has escalated into a humanitarian crisis, resulting in large-scale internal displacement. Women are disproportionately affected, suffering from violence, socio-economic instability, and limited access to essential services.
Objective: This study investigated the intersection between banditry-induced displacement and its impact on women, with a focus on the North-West geopolitical zone of Nigeria. Method: Employing a qualitative research design, the study utilised secondary data sources and applied thematic and content analysis to explore patterns of violence, displacement, and gender-specific vulnerabilities. Results: Findings reveal that banditry-manifesting through kidnapping, armed attacks, and cattle rustling-is driven by poverty, unemployment, porous borders, and arms proliferation. Women bear the brunt of displacement, experiencing economic deprivation, trauma, sexual violence, and restricted access to healthcare and education. Conclusion: The study concludes that banditry in Nigeria’s North-West has created a cycle of insecurity and displacement with severe gendered consequences. Addressing this crisis requires more than military action; it demands socio-economic reforms and improved protection mechanisms for women. Unique Contribution: This research adds to the understanding of how security challenges disproportionately affect women, underscoring the importance of gender-sensitive responses in conflict-affected regions. Key Recommendation: The Nigerian government should adopt a coordinated, technology-driven security strategy, strengthen inter-agency collaboration, and align national policies with global protection standards. Addressing root causes such as poverty and poor governance is critical to reducing women’s vulnerability to displacement and violence. |
