| Abstract: | Background: Domestic violence against women is a global phenomenon that transcends geographical boundaries, cultures, and socioeconomic statuses. In Nigeria, particularly in the capital city of Abuja, reports of domestic violence have been steadily increasing. One platform where such incidents are often reported is Facebook, a popular social media platform widely used in Nigeria. Objective: This study investigated perspectives of Abuja residents on Facebook reports of domestic violence against women in the area. Methods: Descriptive survey research design was adopted. Using questionnaire, data were collected from 384 respondents. Results: Findings show frequent reporting of domestic violence on Facebook by citizen journalists in the area, but there was lack of follow-up by the citizen journalists, resulting in thematic gaps. Majority of the study’s participants further expressed dissatisfaction with how the stories were framed. Conclusion: The study concludes that there was need for social media education to increase social media literacy among citizen journalists and other residents of the FCT. This would help the citizen journalists take greater responsibility for reporting and raising awareness, as well as, recommending regular follow-up coverage to offer thematic analysis and change societal mindsets to reduce violence against women. |
