| Abstract: | Background: Journalism is a demanding profession, often characterized by irregular schedules, high stress, and unpredictability. These challenges are compounded for female journalists, especially in regions like North-Central Nigeria, where societal expectations and entrenched gender roles further strain the balance between professional responsibilities and family life.
Objective: This study assessed the work-family balance challenges faced by female journalists in North-Central Nigeria, identifying key work-related factors impacting their family lives and exploring coping strategies employed to navigate these dual responsibilities. Method: Grounded in the Work-Family Interface Theory, the study utilized a cross-sectional survey design with a four-point Likert scale questionnaire administered to a sample of 246 female journalists from the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) in the North-Central geopolitical zone. Data analysis included descriptive statistics such as mean and standard deviation. Results: Findings revealed that long and irregular working hours, frequent travel, and the unpredictable nature of news significantly disrupt the family lives of female journalists. Stress emerged as the most impactful factor. While some participants managed these challenges through time management, family support, and boundary setting, systemic barriers like inflexible workplace policies hindered effective work-life balance. Conclusion: The study highlights the need for media organizations to implement flexible work policies, provide support services such as childcare and mental health resources, and promote a culture of inclusivity to help female journalists balance their professional and family responsibilities. Addressing these systemic issues is crucial to fostering gender equity and retaining women in the journalism profession. |
