| Abstract: | Background: The advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies poses both opportunities and challenges for the media industry, particularly regarding news production. Despite AI's potential to enhance accuracy and credibility, varying levels of adoption among broadcast stations in North Central Nigeria raise concerns about the industry’s readiness to leverage these technologies effectively.
Objective: This study aimed to investigate the extent of AI adoption in news production among selected broadcast stations in this region and identify key factors influencing its implementation. Methodology: Employing a descriptive survey design, the research surveyed 265 staff members from 14 broadcast stations, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative methods to gather comprehensive data on AI adoption and its influencing factors. Results: The findings revealed a mixed landscape of AI adoption. While there were low adoption rates for AI-powered content generation and analytics tools, a high adoption rate for AI-assisted fact-checking and verification tools was noted. Additionally, a significant gap in staff training on AI technologies indicated a need for capacity building. Factors influencing AI adoption included cost considerations, lack of technical expertise, and the potential for AI to improve accuracy and speed, whereas concerns about job security were considered less influential. Conclusion: The study concluded that broadcast stations in North Central Nigeria are adopting a pragmatic approach to AI, focusing on tangible benefits over job security concerns. Unique Contributions: The study has offered new insights into the adoption of AI by broadcast stations in North Central Nigeria. Key Recommendations: The study recommended that broadcast stations should optimize the benefits of AI in news production, it is crucial for these stations to invest in comprehensive training programs that equip staff with the necessary skills. |
